The Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA) was established under the Kenya Water Towers Agency Order of 2012, aimed at coordinating the protection and sustainable management of the country’s water towers. Its key functions include conserving and rehabilitating these critical ecosystems, promoting community involvement, and conducting research to enhance water security. The agency plays a vital role in safeguarding biodiversity, ensuring sustainable water supply, and mitigating climate change impacts. By working with various stakeholders, KWTA enhances environmental governance, supporting Kenya’s efforts towards sustainable development and the realization of the Big Four National Development Agenda.

CEO: Prof. Julius Gordon Tanui

Prof. Julius Tanui, PhD, has over 20 years of experience in Environmental Geo-information and Sustainable Development. He holds a PhD from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. A specialist in environmental education and GIS, he has published 23 papers, led international projects, and received the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) award.
