Kenya Cultural Centre

Overview

The Kenya Cultural Centre, established under the Kenya Cultural Centre Act (Cap. 218) in 1951, serves as a hub for nurturing and promoting Kenyan arts and culture. It operates the Kenya National Theatre, offering facilities for performing arts, cultural events, and educational activities. KCC’s mandate includes preserving Kenyan cultural heritage, supporting artists through training and exposure, and fostering appreciation of arts and culture. The Centre collaborates with local and international stakeholders to promote creativity and cultural exchange, contributing to the development of a vibrant cultural identity in Kenya.

CEO: Michael Pundo

Mr. Pundo holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts), a cultural leadership certificate from AFAI, and is completing an MSc in Conflict Resolution. An expert in cultural management, he has extensive experience in organizing festivals and cultural exchanges globally and is skilled in ethnic policy, theatre direction, and conflict management.

Functions

  • Promotion of Performing Arts: Facilitate and develop performing arts, including theatre, music, and dance, through programs and events at the Kenya National Theatre.
  • Cultural Preservation: Preserve and promote Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage, ensuring its transmission to future generations.
  • Capacity Building for Artists: Provide training and development opportunities for artists to enhance their skills and professional growth.
  • Provision of Facilities: Offer state-of-the-art facilities for artistic and cultural performances, exhibitions, and educational programs.
  • Cultural Research: Conduct and support research into Kenya’s cultural practices, traditions, and the creative economy.
  • Collaboration and Networking: Partner with local and international organizations to promote cultural exchange and global recognition of Kenyan arts.
  • Audience Development: Encourage appreciation and participation in the arts among the Kenyan public through outreach and community engagement initiatives.
  • Support for Emerging Talent: Identify and nurture young and emerging artists by providing platforms for exposure and development.
