Kenya Film Classification Board

Overview

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) was established under the Films and Stage Plays Act (Cap 222) of 1963, with operations starting in 2007. Its mandate includes regulating the film industry, classifying films, promoting responsible content, and ensuring that media adhere to national values. KFCB aims to protect children and youth from harmful content, establish standards for film production, and promote Kenyan culture and creative industry growth. It also works to maintain ethical standards in broadcasting and online content.

CEO: CPA Paskal Martin Opiyo

Mr. Paskal M. Opiyo is the Acting CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Nairobi and an MBA from Daystar University. With over 20 years of
experience, he previously served as the Finance Manager and Chief Manager, Corporate Services at KFCB.

Functions

  • Enforcing Compliance: Monitors the implementation of the Films and Stage Plays Act and ensures media companies comply with the standards.
  • Collaboration with International Agencies: Works with global film organizations to ensure Kenya’s film industry aligns with international standards.
  • Industry Development: Facilitates the growth of the local film industry through strategic interventions and collaborations with filmmakers.
