Registrar of Sports

Overview

The Registrar of Sports in Kenya was established under the Sports Act, 2013 (No. 25 of 2013). Its mandate includes overseeing the regulation, registration, and licensing of sports organizations, professionals, and agents. The Registrar ensures compliance with national sports laws, conducts inspections, and manages the licensing of sporting bodies. It also plays a role in election monitoring, revenue sharing, and dispute resolution within sports organizations. Additionally, it safeguards the interests of athletes, implements anti-doping measures, and upholds standards in the sports industry​.

Functions

  • Registration and Licensing: The Registrar is responsible for registering sports organizations, professionals, agents, and ensuring they obtain the necessary licenses.
  • Compliance Oversight: Ensures compliance with the laws and regulations governing sports organizations and activities in Kenya.
  • Inspection: Carries out inspections of sports organizations to ensure they meet the required standards.
  • Conflict Resolution: Facilitates the resolution of disputes within sports organizations and between athletes and bodies.
  • Revenue Distribution: Oversees the fair distribution of revenue from sports activities, including sponsorship and merchandising.
  • Monitoring Sports Elections: Supervises elections of office bearers within sports organizations to ensure fairness.
  • Anti-Doping Oversight: Plays a role in enforcing anti-doping regulations within the sports sector.
  • Athlete Protection: Works to protect the rights and welfare of athletes within the legal framework.
  • Promotion of National Sports Development: Promotes the development of various sports disciplines at both grassroots and national levels.
  • Research and Policy Implementation: Conducts research to inform policies and practices that will improve the sports sector in Kenya
