The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) of Kenya was established under the Capital Markets Act, Cap 485A in 1989 and began operations in 1990. It regulates and develops Kenya’s capital markets, ensuring investor protection, fair trading, and market stability. CMA licenses and supervises market intermediaries, including stockbrokers, investment banks, and fund managers. It also oversees the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) and Collective Investment Schemes. The authority promotes market transparency, innovation, and investor confidence to support economic growth by facilitating capital mobilization for businesses and the government.

CEO: Mr. Wyckliffe M. Shamiah

Mr. Shamiah holds a Bachelor’s in Economics and Mathematics from Egerton University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Nairobi. A Certified Public Accountant, he has over 23 years of experience at CMA, previously serving as Director of Market Operations. He has held various senior roles in compliance, market supervision, and risk management.

  • Regulation of Capital Markets – Supervises and regulates capital market activities to ensure fair, efficient, and transparent operations.
  • Licensing and Supervision – Grants licenses and oversees market intermediaries like stockbrokers, investment banks, and fund managers.
  • Investor Protection – Ensures investor confidence by enforcing fair trading practices and preventing fraud.
  • Market Development – Promotes innovation, new products, and market expansion to enhance investment opportunities.
  • Enforcement of Compliance – Monitors compliance with capital market laws and takes action against violations.
  • Facilitation of Capital Raising – Supports businesses and the government in raising funds through securities issuance.
  • Oversight of Market Infrastructure – Regulates the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Central Depository & Settlement Corporation (CDSC), and other platforms.
  • Education and Awareness – Conducts investor education programs to promote financial literacy and informed investing.
  • Policy Advisory to Government – Advises on policies and regulations to foster a robust capital market environment.
  • Promoting Corporate Governance – Encourages good governance, transparency, and accountability among listed firms and market participants.
