The Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) in Kenya was established under the Special Economic Zones Act in 2015. Its mandate is to foster economic growth by developing and managing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) that attract local and foreign investment. SEZA aims to enhance industrialization, create jobs, and boost exports by providing regulatory incentives, including tax exemptions. Key achievements include the establishment of various SEZs across the country, positioning Kenya as a competitive investment destination in the region. This initiative is crucial for driving economic diversification and increasing foreign direct investment.

CEO: Dr. Kenneth Chelule, P.Eng.

Dr. Kenneth Chelule holds a PhD and MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Staffordshire University and an Executive MBA from JKUAT. With over 20 years of experience in industrial research and MSME support, he has held leadership roles at KIRDI and worked with Johnson & Johnson, Summit Medical, and the University of Leeds.

Functions

  • Establishment of SEZs: Develop and designate Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to promote investment and economic growth.
  • Investment Promotion: Attract local and foreign investors by creating a conducive environment for business operations.
  • Regulatory Framework: Provide a legal and regulatory framework that governs the operations of SEZs.
  • Tax Incentives: Offer various tax exemptions and incentives to businesses operating within SEZs to enhance competitiveness.
  • Infrastructure Development: Facilitate the provision of necessary infrastructure in SEZs, including utilities and transport links.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Oversee the performance of SEZs and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Job Creation: Promote job creation through the establishment of industries and businesses in SEZs.
  • Sector Diversification: Encourage diversification of the economy by supporting various sectors, such as manufacturing and services.
  • Collaboration: Work in partnership with other government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and international organizations to enhance investment.
  • Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building programs for stakeholders involved in SEZ operations to enhance skills and expertise.
