The Council for Legal Education (CLE) in Kenya was established under the Council of Legal Education Act, Cap 16A in 1997 and later restructured by the Legal Education Act, 2012. It is an autonomous body responsible for regulating legal education and training in Kenya.
CLE’s functions include accrediting legal training institutions, ensuring the quality of legal education, and overseeing the admission of legal professionals to practice law. The Council also sets standards for the curricula of law schools and supervises the delivery of professional courses for advocates and other legal practitioners.
CEO: Jennifer Gitiri
Ms. Jennifer Gitiri is the Acting Secretary/CEO of the Council for Legal Education. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 10 years of experience. She holds two LLMs, in Comparative Constitutional Law and Public International Law, and a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

Functions
- Accreditation of Legal Education Institutions: Evaluates and accredits institutions offering legal education in Kenya.
- Setting Standards for Legal Education: Establishes and maintains educational standards for law schools and training programs.
- Regulating Legal Training: Oversees legal training to ensure compliance with established curricula and requirements.
- Admission of Advocates: Manages the process of admitting individuals to the legal profession.
- Monitoring Quality of Legal Education: Ensures the quality and relevance of legal education provided by institutions.
- Approval of Legal Programmes: Approves degree and diploma programs in law offered by recognized institutions.
- Regulating Continuing Legal Education: Oversees the professional development and education of practicing lawyers.
- Certification of Legal Trainers: Certifies and registers legal educators and trainers within Kenya.
- Research and Policy Development: Conducts research and develops policies to enhance legal education in the country.
- Dispute Resolution: Handles complaints and disputes related to legal education and training.
