The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) was established in 2007 under the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority Act, 2006. It serves to coordinate and facilitate the development of transport infrastructure, promote trade, and improve efficiency within the Northern Corridor, which links the East African region to the international markets. The Authority works with member states, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, to streamline transit and transport systems, enhance regional integration, and address challenges within the corridor’s logistics network.
Functions
- Regional Transport Coordination: Coordinate transit and transport activities along the Northern Corridor to ensure seamless movement of goods.
- Infrastructure Development: Promote the development and modernization of transport infrastructure, including roads, ports, and railways, within the Northern Corridor.
- Trade Facilitation: Enhance trade among member states by ensuring efficient and cost-effective transport services.
- Policy Implementation: Advocate for and implement transport policies that improve efficiency and reduce costs in the Northern Corridor.
- Logistics Management: Streamline logistics systems and procedures to facilitate faster and safer transportation of goods.
- Member State Collaboration: Facilitate cooperation among member countries (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and DR Congo) on matters of transport and transit.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor the performance of transport systems and the implementation of transit agreements.
- Private Sector Engagement: Encourage public-private partnerships to enhance infrastructure development and transport services.
- Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building programs for professionals in the transport and logistics sectors.
- Research and Development: Conduct research on best practices, technological advancements, and emerging trends in transport and transit.
