The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA), established in 2012 under the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority Act, is responsible for overseeing transport planning and management within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. It aims to
address urban mobility challenges by coordinating public transport systems, improving road infrastructure, and enhancing traffic management. NAMATA plays a critical role in reducing congestion, promoting sustainable transport solutions, and ensuring safer
and more efficient travel within Nairobi and surrounding areas. The authority works to implement policies that improve public transport services, facilitate regional connectivity, and contribute to the city’s urban development.

CEO: Eng. Francis Gitau

Eng. Francis Gitau holds a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Nairobi, an Executive MBA from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. With over 30 years in road sector development and management, he previously served as Infrastructure Secretary at the State Department of Roads.

Functions

  • Transport Planning: Develop and implement transport strategies for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
  • Public Transport Coordination: Coordinate the provision of public transport services within the metropolitan area.
  • Traffic Management: Implement policies to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion in Nairobi and surrounding regions.
  • Infrastructure Development: Oversee the development and maintenance of transport infrastructure, including roads and public transport facilities.
  • Policy Formulation: Formulate and implement policies to improve urban mobility and transportation services.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with local, regional, and national authorities on transport-related projects.
  • Promotion of Sustainable Transport: Advocate for environmentally sustainable transport options, such as non-motorized transport and electric vehicles.
  • Safety and Security: Ensure safety measures are in place for both public and private transport systems.
  • Regulation of Transport Services: Regulate and monitor public and private transport operators to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Public Awareness and Education: Conduct public awareness campaigns on safe, efficient, and responsible use of the transport system.
