The Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) is the administrative body responsible for coordinating and facilitating the implementation of policies and programs across the EAC. It was established under the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, which entered into force on July 7, 2000. The Secretariat supports the decision-making organs of the EAC, including the Summit and the Council of Ministers. It plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the EAC, providing technical, administrative, and logistical support to the Community’s activities and initiatives.
Sec. General : Veronica Mueni Nduva, CBS
Veronica M. Nduva serves as the Principal Executive Officer of the Community and also as the Secretary to the Summit of the EAC Heads of State. She coordinates the EAC Council of Ministers meetings and also oversees all the Institutions of the EAC. She holds a Master of Arts in Communication and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration and is an accomplished governance public sector professional with 24 years of career experience.

Functions
- Policy Coordination: Facilitates the implementation of policies and decisions made by the EAC’s governing organs, including the Summit and Council of Ministers.
- Program Management: Coordinates regional programs and projects in various sectors such as trade, health, infrastructure, and education.
- Administrative Support: Provides administrative and logistical support to EAC institutions, ensuring effective operations.
- Research and Analysis: Conducts research and analysis on matters related to regional integration and development.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepares reports, documents, and studies on EAC activities for the Summit, Council of Ministers, and other organs.
- Human Resource Management: Manages EAC staff, ensuring adequate staffing and capacity building across the Secretariat.
- Resource Mobilization: Identifies and mobilizes financial resources, including grants, to support EAC programs and activities.
- Promote Regional Integration: Acts as a catalyst in promoting deeper economic, social, and political integration within the region.
- Facilitating Communication: Ensures effective communication between EAC organs, member states, stakeholders, and the public.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitors and evaluates the implementation of EAC programs, ensuring they meet the set objectives and contribute to regional development.
