The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), operational since 1980, is an institution aimed at fostering cooperation and integration among universities and higher education institutions in the East African Community (EAC). The IUCEA’s mandate includes promoting academic collaboration, improving education quality, and enhancing the mobility of students and staff across the region. It facilitates the development of joint academic programs, research partnerships, and standardization of higher education systems. The IUCEA also supports regional integration by encouraging universities to contribute to the socio-economic development of East Africa through innovative solutions and capacity-building.
Functions
- Promote Regional Cooperation: Foster cooperation among universities and higher education institutions in the East African Community (EAC).
- Enhance Quality of Higher Education: Develop and implement policies to improve the quality and standards of higher education in the region.
- Facilitate Academic Mobility: Promote the movement of students, academic staff, and researchers across EAC member states.
- Develop Joint Programs: Support the establishment of joint academic programs, courses, and research initiatives.
- Coordinate Research Collaboration: Facilitate collaborative research projects between universities to address regional challenges.
- Provide Policy Advice: Offer policy guidance and recommendations on higher education matters to EAC institutions and member states.
- Monitor and Evaluate: Assess the performance and impact of higher education institutions in achieving regional development goals.
- Promote Innovations: Encourage innovation and the commercialization of research outputs from universities.
- Build Institutional Capacity: Strengthen the administrative and academic capacities of universities across East Africa.
- Support Regional Integration: Contribute to the socio-economic integration of the EAC through education and capacity-building.
