The East African Science and Technology Commission

Overview

The East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), operational since April 26, 2010, is a specialized institution of the East African Community (EAC). Its mandate is to coordinate and promote the development and application of science, technology, and innovation across the region. EASTECO fosters regional collaboration to address challenges in sectors like health, agriculture, and infrastructure. The Commission supports research, innovation, and capacity building in science and technology, aiming to enhance sustainable development and contribute to the region’s economic growth. It also encourages the adoption of modern technologies for improved livelihoods in East Africa.

CEO: Dr. Sylvance Okoth

Dr. Sylvance Okoth holds a PhD and has a background in science, technology, and innovation. In his current role, he leads EASTECO in promoting and coordinating the development, management, and application of science, technology, and innovation for socio-economic development and regional integration in the East African Community Partner States.

Functions

  • Coordinate Science and Technology Activities: Oversee and promote science, technology, and innovation efforts within the EAC member states.
  • Promote Regional Cooperation: Foster collaboration in scientific research, technology development, and innovation across the region.
  • Enhance Research Capacity: Build and strengthen the research capacities of institutions within EAC to address regional challenges.
  • Policy Formulation: Support the development of science and technology policies aligned with regional and global standards.
  • Support Technological Innovation: Encourage innovation in key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and energy.
  • Promote Scientific Education: Advocate for science and technology education at all levels to build a skilled workforce.
  • Facilitate Information Sharing: Create platforms for sharing scientific knowledge, research findings, and best practices among member states.
  • Encourage Technology Transfer: Facilitate the transfer and commercialization of technologies within the region.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Projects: Track the progress and impact of regional science and technology projects to ensure they meet objectives.
  • Advocate for Sustainable Development: Ensure that scientific and technological developments contribute to the region’s sustainable development goals.
