The East African Kiswahili Commission (EAKC), established under the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, became operational on July 7, 2010. Its mission is to promote Kiswahili as a regional language within the EAC and beyond. The Commission focuses on the standardization of Kiswahili, fostering its use in education, media, and communication. It aims to enhance cultural integration and regional cooperation by promoting the teaching, learning, and practical application of Kiswahili across EAC member states. The EAKC also works to improve the quality of Kiswahili language resources.

E.S: Dr. Caroline Asiimwe

Dr. Caroline Asiimwe is the Executive Secretary of the East African Kiswahili Commission, driving Kiswahili’s integration across the region. A distinguished academic, she holds a Ph.D. in African Languages and has extensively researched language policy and planning, cultural integration, and Kiswahili’s role in fostering East African unity.

Functions

  • Promote Kiswahili: Advocate for the use of Kiswahili as a regional language for communication, education, and cultural exchange within the EAC.
  • Standardize Kiswahili: Develop and promote uniform standards for Kiswahili language usage, including spelling, grammar, and pronunciation.
  • Support Education: Facilitate the teaching and learning of Kiswahili in schools, universities, and other educational institutions across the EAC.
  • Develop Language Resources: Support the creation and distribution of Kiswahili textbooks, dictionaries, and other educational materials.
  • Promote Kiswahili in Media: Encourage the use of Kiswahili in print, broadcast, and digital media within the region.
  • Cultural Integration: Foster cultural exchange through the use of Kiswahili, promoting understanding and unity among East African communities.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work with governments, educational institutions, and regional organizations to advance the use and development of Kiswahili.
  • Support Research: Conduct and support research on Kiswahili language development, its role in regional integration, and its influence globally.
  • Organize Kiswahili Events: Coordinate and host conferences, workshops, and competitions to encourage the use and appreciation of Kiswahili.
  • Promote International Use: Advocate for the adoption of Kiswahili in other regions, extending its influence as a lingua franca beyond East Africa.
