The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), established under the Nuclear Regulatory Act of 2019, began operations in 2021 to oversee and ensure nuclear safety and radiation protection in Kenya. The authority regulates the use of nuclear materials, enforces safety protocols, issues licenses, and monitors radiation exposure to protect public health. Additionally, KNRA collaborates with international organizations to develop a nuclear regulatory framework supporting Kenya’s goals for safe nuclear energy development, including plans for a nuclear power plant by 2035.

James Keter is the Director-General of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), holding a Master’s in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Manchester. With over 20 years of experience in regulatory roles, he specializes in nuclear safety and radiation
protection, significantly contributing to Kenya’s nuclear energy initiatives.
