The Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) was established under the Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Act, 1999. Its primary mandate includes regulating the training, registration, and practice of medical laboratory technicians and technologists. KMLTTB ensures adherence to professional standards, accredits training institutions, and promotes continuous professional development. Additionally, the board plays a vital role in safeguarding public health by maintaining the integrity of laboratory services in Kenya.

CEO: Mr. Patrick Kisabei

Mr. Patrick Kisabei is the current Acting Registrar and Board Secretary of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB). He holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Nairobi and has a solid background in laboratory management and public health. With extensive experience in regulatory oversight, Kisabei is dedicated to
maintaining high standards in medical laboratory practices to ensure quality healthcare services in Kenya.

Functions

  • Regulation of Practice: Ensures that all medical laboratory technicians and technologists adhere to professional standards and ethics.
  • Registration and Licensing: Responsible for the registration and licensing of qualified medical laboratory personnel to practice in Kenya.
  • Accreditation of Training Institutions: Evaluates and accredits institutions that provide training for medical laboratory technicians and technologists.
  • Setting Educational Standards: Develops and implements educational standards for training programs in medical laboratory sciences.
  • Monitoring Compliance: Oversees compliance with the regulations and standards set forth by the board in the practice of laboratory medicine.
  • Disciplinary Actions: Investigates complaints and conducts disciplinary actions against registered practitioners who violate professional standards.
  • Professional Development: Promotes continuing professional development and education for laboratory practitioners to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Policy Advice: Advises the government on matters related to laboratory services and the profession of medical laboratory technology.
  • Public Awareness: Engages in public education campaigns to inform the community about the role and importance of medical laboratory services.
  • Research and Innovation: Encourages and supports research initiatives in laboratory medicine to improve health outcomes and practices.
