The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in Kenya, established in 1966, is mandated to provide accessible health insurance to Kenyans, particularly covering inpatient, outpatient, maternity, and chronic disease treatments. Initially a Ministry of Health department, it became a state corporation under the NHIF Act No. 9 of 1998. NHIF’s primary function is to ensure that members and their dependents receive quality healthcare at accredited facilities, with contributions varying by income for formal sector workers and a flat rate for informal sector members.
Functions
- Provide Health Insurance: Ensure access to healthcare for Kenyans through affordable health insurance coverage.
- Manage Member Contributions: Collect contributions from employed and self-employed members, with rates based on income levels.
- Inpatient and Outpatient Coverage: Offer coverage for inpatient and outpatient services at accredited hospitals.
- Maternity and Chronic Illness Coverage: Cover maternity services and treatments for chronic illnesses.
- Support Universal Health Coverage: Contribute to Kenya’s goal of universal health coverage by providing medical insurance options.
- Accredit Health Facilities: Partner with and accredit hospitals and clinics for service provision to members.
- Claims Processing: Process and settle claims for healthcare services used by members at accredited facilities.
- Preventive Health Programs: Support preventive healthcare services to reduce medical costs and improve public health.
- Member Education: Educate members on benefits, registration, and healthcare services available through NHIF.
- Policy and Program Development: Work with the government to develop policies that enhance health insurance coverage for Kenyans.
