The National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K) is a statutory body established to coordinate the national response to cancer prevention and control. Its mandate includes promoting public awareness about cancer, providing comprehensive cancer care, conducting research, and training healthcare professionals. The institute also advocates for policies that support cancer patients and drives initiatives to enhance the quality of cancer treatment across the country. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, NCI-K aims to improve the overall health outcomes related to cancer in Kenya.

CEO: Dr. Elias Melly

Dr. Elias Melly is the current CEO of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K). He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Moi University and a Master’s in Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine from Alexandria University, Egypt. With extensive experience in clinical care, research, and program development, he is committed to transformative leadership and healthcare advocacy​.

Functions

  • Cancer Prevention and Control – Coordinate national efforts to prevent and control cancer through awareness and education initiatives.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns – Promote cancer awareness to educate the public on prevention, early detection, and treatment options.
  • Research and Development – Conduct and support research to improve cancer treatment and control strategies.
  • Healthcare Professional Training – Provide training and continuing education for healthcare professionals in oncology and related fields.
  • Policy Advocacy – Advocate for effective cancer control policies and legislation to improve patient care and treatment access.
  • Comprehensive Cancer Care – Facilitate access to holistic cancer treatment services, including diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care.
  • Collaboration with Stakeholders – Work with governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations to enhance cancer control initiatives.
  • Data Collection and Analysis – Collect and analyze data on cancer incidence, mortality, and survival to inform policy and practice.
  • Resource Mobilization – Mobilize resources to support cancer prevention, research, and treatment programs across the country.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation – Monitor and evaluate cancer control programs to assess their effectiveness and improve health outcomes.
