The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) was established in 1979 and plays a vital role in conducting health research and developing innovative solutions for disease prevention and control. KEMRI’s mandate includes epidemiological studies, public health research, and training healthcare professionals. The institute collaborates with international organizations to strengthen healthcare systems and address emerging health threats in Kenya. With multiple research centers across the country, KEMRI focuses on various health issues, including infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases, contributing significantly to national health policy and strategy development.

CEO: Professor Elijah Songok

Professor Elijah Songok is the Acting Director General of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). He holds a Doctorate in
Veterinary Medicine and a Master’s degree in Veterinary Epidemiology. With extensive experience in public health research, he has
significantly contributed to initiatives addressing infectious diseases in Kenya.

Functions

  • Conduct Health Research: KEMRI undertakes biomedical and health research to address local and regional health challenges.
