The Kenya Foreign Service Institute was established under the Foreign Service Act No. 22 of 2014 and began operations in 2007. Its mandate includes training diplomatic personnel, conducting research on foreign relations, and enhancing Kenya’s capacity in international diplomacy. The institute also focuses on curriculum
development, public diplomacy, and collaboration with other institutions to strengthen Kenya’s foreign service capabilities. By fostering a skilled and knowledgeable diplomatic workforce, the institute plays a crucial role in advancing Kenya’s foreign
policy and international engagements.
CEO: Ambassador Kirimi Kaberia
Ambassador Kirimi Kaberia is the current head of the Kenya Foreign Service Institute. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Daystar University and an LLM in International Relations from Marquette University, alongside studies at Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía in Spain. With extensive experience in diplomacy, he has served as Kenya’s Ambassador to several countries, including Brazil and Argentina, and has worked with various international media outlets.

Functions
- Training Diplomatic Personnel: Provide comprehensive training programs for diplomats and foreign service officers to enhance their skills in diplomacy and international relations.
- Research and Policy Development: Conduct research on international relations, foreign policy, and diplomatic practices to inform Kenya’s foreign service strategies.
- Capacity Building: Strengthen the capabilities of government officials and stakeholders involved in international affairs through targeted capacity-building initiatives.
- Public Diplomacy: Promote understanding and cooperation between Kenya and other nations through public diplomacy programs.
- Curriculum Development: Design and implement training curricula that reflect current trends in diplomacy and international relations.
- Collaboration with Other Institutions: Partner with local and international institutions for knowledge exchange, joint training, and research initiatives.
- Promoting Kenya’s Foreign Policy: Support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in promoting and implementing Kenya’s foreign policy objectives.
- Advisory Role: Provide expert advice to the government on issues related to international relations and foreign service practices.
