The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) was established in 2019 under Kenya’s Energy Act, 2019. Its mandate includes implementing rural electrification projects, promoting renewable energy development, and enhancing electricity access nationwide. REREC focuses on sustainable energy solutions to support economic growth and reduce environmental impact by expanding the use of solar, wind, and other renewable resources, especially in underserved areas.

CEO: Dr. Rose Mkalama

Dr. Rose Mkalama served as acting CEO prior to her official appointment. With over 30 years of experience in the public sector, she holds a PhD in Strategic Management and an MBA in Human Resource Management from the University of Nairobi. She also possesses a Bachelor of Laws degree from the same institution and is a Certified Utility Management Specialist. Dr. Mkalama’s extensive background includes various senior roles within REREC, including Head of the Legal Department.

Functions

  • Expand Rural Electrification: Facilitate access to electricity in underserved rural regions to drive local development.
  • Advance Renewable Energy Projects: Establish solar, wind, and other renewable projects to reduce reliance on non-renewable resources.
  • Create Renewable Energy Policies: Formulate and implement policies for sustainable energy development across Kenya.
  • Support Kenya’s Electrification Goals: Work towards universal access to electricity, especially for marginalized areas.
  • Install Off-Grid Systems: Set up mini-grids and standalone solar systems in areas outside the main grid.
  • Community Outreach and Training: Educate communities on renewable energy benefits and sustainable energy practices.
  • Administer Renewable Energy Funds: Manage funding resources allocated for green energy projects, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Maintain Existing Energy Infrastructure: Ensure that rural electrification and renewable energy projects are operational and reliable.
  • Drive Research and Development: Promote innovation in renewable technologies suited to Kenya’s unique environment and needs.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Partner with government agencies, private entities, and NGOs to broaden the reach of energy initiatives.
