Overview

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is a statutory body in Kenya established under the Energy Act of 2019. Its mandate includes regulating the energy and petroleum sectors to ensure fair pricing, efficiency, and sustainability. EPRA is responsible for issuing licenses, monitoring energy supply, and enforcing compliance with regulations. The authority promotes renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives while ensuring consumer protection. Additionally, EPRA conducts research and analysis to inform policy decisions, collaborates with stakeholders to enhance service delivery, and fosters the development of the energy sector to meet national energy needs.

Functions

  • Regulation of Energy Sector: Establishing and enforcing regulations to govern the energy sector, including electricity and petroleum.
  • Licensing: Issuing licenses to energy and petroleum operators, ensuring compliance with legal and safety standards.
  • Consumer Protection: Safeguarding consumer rights by ensuring fair pricing, quality services, and addressing grievances.
  • Monitoring Compliance: Monitoring compliance with energy laws, regulations, and standards by all sector players.
  • Promoting Renewable Energy: Encouraging the development and utilization of renewable energy sources to enhance energy sustainability.
  • Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Promoting energy efficiency practices and technologies to reduce consumption and environmental impact.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collecting and analyzing data on energy production, consumption, and trends to inform policy and decision-making.
  • Research and Development: Conducting research to support innovation and development in the energy sector.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborating with government agencies, private sector players, and other stakeholders to enhance energy service delivery.
  • Public Awareness: Conducting public education and awareness campaigns about energy conservation and the benefits of renewable energy.
