The University of Nairobi, established in 1970, is Kenya’s first public university. It evolved from the University of East Africa, which was dissolved in 1969, with the University of Nairobi becoming an independent institution. The university offers a broad range of academic programs across various disciplines, including humanities, sciences, engineering, and health. It is renowned for its research output, contribution to policy development, and commitment to societal development. The University of Nairobi plays a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s educational, cultural, and economic landscape, producing graduates who contribute to both local and global advancements.

VC: Prof. Patrick Verkooijen

Professor Patrick Verkooijen, appointed Chancellor of the University of Nairobi in
February 2024, holds a Ph.D. from Wageningen University, an MPA from Harvard University, a Master of Science in Social and Political Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam, and an environmental engineering degree from HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. He is the CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation and has served as the Distinguished Chair of The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi.
