The Universities Funding Board (UFB) was established in 2013 under the Universities Act, 2012, to oversee the allocation of government funds to public universities in Kenya. Its primary mandate is to ensure equitable and efficient distribution of resources to enhance the quality of education and support infrastructure development in these institutions. The UFB also works to monitor and evaluate the use of funds, promoting transparency and accountability. By coordinating financial assistance, the board plays a key role in advancing higher education and contributing to Kenya’s overall educational and economic development goals.

Mr. Geoffrey Monari is the CEO of the Universities Funding Board (UFB). He holds a
Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor’s
degree in Economics. With extensive experience in financial management and public sector leadership, Monari has contributed significantly to the advancement of higher education funding.

Functions
- Disbursement of Funds: Allocate government funds to public universities in Kenya to support their operational and development needs.
- Resource Allocation: Ensure equitable distribution of funds based on the needs and priorities of each university.
- Monitor Fund Usage: Monitor the utilization of allocated funds to ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability in their usage.
- Infrastructure Development Support: Fund the development of infrastructure and facilities within public universities to improve learning environments.
- Promote Access to Higher Education: Enhance access to higher education through appropriate funding mechanisms for both public and private students.
- Advisory Role: Advise the government on policies regarding funding for public universities and higher education.
- Financial Planning: Assist universities in financial planning, ensuring the sustainability of funding and proper management of resources.
- Support for Research and Innovation: Allocate funds for research, innovation, and academic programs that contribute to national development.
- Collaboration with Stakeholders: Work with universities, the government, and other stakeholders to improve funding strategies and educational outcomes.
- Capacity Building: Support capacity building within universities by providing financial assistance for training, staff development, and academic advancements.
