The School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU) was established in 1972 under the Education Act (Cap. 211) to support the education sector by providing essential learning materials. SEPU manufactures and supplies a wide range of educational resources such as desks, chairs, laboratory equipment, and books to schools across Kenya. Its primary objective is to ensure that schools, especially in underserved areas, have the necessary infrastructure and learning tools to enhance the quality of education. SEPU plays a crucial role in promoting equitable access to education in Kenya.

Dr. Joel Mabonga, PhD, is the CEO of the School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU).
He holds a Doctorate in Education from Moi University, a Master’s in Educational Administration, and a Bachelor’s in Education. Dr. Mabonga has extensive experience in educational management, having worked in both public and private sectors.

- Manufacture Educational Equipment: SEPU is responsible for producing key educational materials like desks, chairs, blackboards, and laboratory equipment for schools across Kenya.
- Supply Learning Tools: It ensures that schools, especially those in underserved regions, have access to essential learning tools and infrastructure to enhance the quality of education.
- Provision of Textbooks: SEPU also plays a key role in producing and distributing textbooks and other instructional materials, supporting the teaching and learning process.
- Support to Underprivileged Schools: SEPU focuses on ensuring that schools in remote and marginalized areas receive adequate educational resources, bridging the gap in access to learning materials.
- Technical Expertise in Production: SEPU offers technical expertise in the production of school equipment, ensuring that the equipment meets quality standards and is durable.
- Involvement in Curriculum Support: The unit supports the development and revision of curriculum-based educational materials, aligning production with the needs of the education system.
