Established in 1985 as a non-formal learning center under the Sisters of Mercy, Mukuru Primary School (renamed Sancta Maria Kayaba Primary School in 2019) is a vital public institution serving the Mukuru informal settlement in Nairobi. Managed through the Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC), the school has grown from its origins under the shade of trees with 200 students to a comprehensive three-stream facility with an enrollment exceeding 1,900 pupils and a staff of 26 teachers. The school provides a holistic curriculum that includes critical support services such as a school feeding program, social work, and specialized mentorship for vulnerable learners. In December 2025, a newly constructed New Mukuru Primary School and Early Childhood Development (ECD) center was officially handed over to the Ministry of Education and Nairobi County to further address infrastructure gaps and accommodate the growing community population.
