The Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Africa (CEMASTEA) was established in 2003 to enhance the quality of mathematics, science, and technology education in Kenya and across Africa. It serves as a hub for teacher training, curriculum development, and the promotion of innovative teaching methods. CEMASTEA works to strengthen the capacity of educators, particularly in secondary and tertiary institutions, by providing professional development programs. Its mission is to equip educators with modern tools and techniques to improve the learning outcomes in STEM subjects and support national development goals.

CEO: Jacinta L. Akatsa ,HSC

Mrs. Jacinta L. Akatsa, HSC, holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Jomo
Kenyatta University and a Bachelor’s in Education (Science) from Catholic University.
With over 30 years of experience, she has served as Chief Principal at prestigious
schools. As CEO of CEMASTEA, she leads STEM education development across Africa.

Functions

  • Teacher Training: Provide in-service training for mathematics, science, and technology teachers to improve teaching skills and pedagogical methods.
  • Curriculum Development: Contribute to the development and review of mathematics, science, and technology curricula.
  • Capacity Building: Build the capacity of teachers, trainers, and education administrators in STEM subjects.
  • Promote STEM Education: Advocate for the importance of STEM education to enhance national and regional development.
  • Educational Research: Conduct research in STEM education to inform policies and teaching practices.
  • Innovation in Teaching: Encourage the adoption of innovative teaching methods and the use of technology in STEM education.
  • Collaboration with Stakeholders: Work with local, regional, and international organizations to promote quality STEM education.
  • Curriculum Implementation: Support the effective implementation of STEM curricula in schools and institutions.
  • Resource Provision: Provide teaching and learning materials, including textbooks, laboratory equipment, and digital resources.
  • Policy Advocacy: Engage with government bodies to advocate for policies that support the growth of STEM education in Africa.
