Overview

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) was established in 2017 under the Kenya Space Agency Act, with operations commencing in 2018. Its mandate is to develop and promote the use of space science and technology for national development. The KSA coordinates space activities, fosters research and innovation, oversees satellite development, and builds local capacity through training. Additionally, it raises public awareness of space science, establishes international partnerships, and regulates space activities to ensure safety and compliance. The agency plays a crucial role in positioning Kenya as a leader in space technology in Africa.

CEO: Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey

Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgey, Acting Director General of the Kenya Space Agency since 2021, champions space sector growth. He holds a Master’s in Strategic Studies (US Army War College), a Master’s in ICS (BUAA),
and a BTech in Electrical Engineering (Moi University). Kipkosgey has held key roles in logistics and aircraft maintenance.

Functions

  • Policy Development: Formulate national policies and frameworks for the development and use of space science and technology in Kenya.
  • Coordination of Space Activities: Coordinate all space-related activities in the country, ensuring alignment with national development goals.
  • Research and Development: Promote research in space science and technology to foster innovation and applications beneficial to the country.
  • Satellite Development: Oversee the development, launching, and operation of satellites for various purposes, including communication, weather forecasting, and environmental monitoring.
  • Capacity Building: Build local capacity through training programs, scholarships, and partnerships to enhance skills in space technology.
  • Public Awareness: Increase public awareness and appreciation of space science and technology through outreach and education initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Establish partnerships with international space agencies, research institutions, and the private sector for knowledge exchange and technology transfer.
  • Resource Management: Manage and utilize space-related resources, including satellite data, for national development projects.
  • Space Exploration: Promote and support space exploration initiatives that can benefit the country and region.
  • Regulation and Compliance: Develop and enforce regulations governing the use of space technology to ensure safe and responsible operations.
