The Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) was launched in December 2006 to address youth unemployment by promoting entrepreneurship. It became a state corporation in May 2007 under the Public Finance Management Act. Its mandate is to provide affordable loans, business development services, and support market access for youth-led enterprises. The fund encourages youth to shift from job seekers to job creators and offers training and mentorship. YEDF also facilitates youth participation in government procurement opportunities to boost their economic inclusion.

Josiah A. Moriasi serves as the CEO of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund in Kenya. He holds an MBA in Finance and Strategy from the University of Nairobi and has extensive experience in public sector management. Mr. Moriasi’s background spans several leadership roles within financial institutions, focusing on youth development and economic empowerment. He was reinstated as CEO following a court ruling, emphasizing his pivotal role in advancing youth enterprise efforts and aligning with national development goals.

Functions

  • Provide Affordable Credit: Offer loans at affordable rates to youth-led businesses to promote entrepreneurship.
  • Enhance Financial Inclusion: Ensure youth across the country, including marginalized areas, have access to credit facilities.
  • Support Market Access: Facilitate youth in accessing local and international markets for their products and services.
  • Capacity Building: Provide training, mentorship, and business development services to enhance entrepreneurial skills.
  • Promote Government Procurement Participation: Help youth take advantage of the 30% procurement quota reserved for youth, women, and PWDs.
