The East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC), established on February 22, 2011, is a specialized institution of the East African Community (EAC). Its mandate is to promote and coordinate health research across the region, addressing common health challenges such as infectious diseases, maternal health, and non-communicable diseases. The EAHRC facilitates collaboration between member states, research institutions, and international organizations. It also focuses on developing policies and strategies to improve health systems and promoting evidence-based decision-making to enhance public health outcomes in East Africa. The Commission supports sustainable, equitable health development across the region.
Functions
- Promote Health Research: Foster the development and application of health research across the East African region.
- Coordinate Regional Research: Facilitate cooperation and coordination of health research activities among EAC member states.
- Develop Health Policies: Support the development of policies based on scientific evidence to improve health outcomes.
- Promote Capacity Building: Enhance the capacity of research institutions and personnel in health-related fields.
- Address Regional Health Challenges: Focus on addressing common health issues such as infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases.
- Facilitate Research Collaboration: Encourage partnerships between national and international research institutions, universities, and other stakeholders.
- Health Data Management: Support the collection, analysis, and use of health data to inform policy and decision-making.
- Disseminate Research Findings: Ensure the effective dissemination of health research findings to policymakers, practitioners, and the public.
- Foster Sustainable Health Solutions: Promote research that leads to sustainable, context-specific health interventions and solutions.
- Monitor and Evaluate Health Programs: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of health programs in the region to ensure continuous improvement.
