It succeeded the East African Railways Corporation following the dissolution of the East African Community. KRC’s mandate includes constructing, operating, and maintaining an efficient railway system for passenger and cargo transport. It plays a key role in supporting Kenya’s economic development by enhancing trade and connectivity. Additionally, KRC oversees the development of modern railway infrastructure, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), to improve national and regional transport networks.
