Kenya Roads Board

Overview

The Kenya Roads Board (KRB), established under the Kenya Roads Board Act, No. 7 of 1999, began operations in July 2000. It is mandated to oversee the management, development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of Kenya’s road network. KRB administers the Road Maintenance Levy Fund and ensures transparent and efficient utilization of resources for road projects. The Board plays a pivotal role in coordinating road sector activities, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting sustainable development. Its mission is to provide quality roads to support Kenya’s economic growth and improve connectivity nationwide.

CEO: Rashid Mohamed

Rashid Mohamed, MBS, is the Director General of the Kenya Roads Board. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Oxford University. With extensive experience in public infrastructure management, he has served in various leadership roles, contributing significantly to the planning, development, and maintenance of Kenya’s road network.

Functions

  • Administer the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF): Manage funds collected for road maintenance and rehabilitation.
  • Allocate Funds: Disburse finances to road agencies for specific road projects.
  • Coordinate Road Development: Ensure harmonized planning and implementation of road programs across agencies.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Projects: Oversee road works to ensure compliance with quality, timelines, and budgets.
  • Audit Fund Utilization: Ensure proper use of allocated resources through regular audits.
  • Advise the Government: Provide recommendations on policies for road network development and management.
  • Promote Research and Innovation: Support advancements in road construction and maintenance technologies.
  • Engage Stakeholders: Collaborate with stakeholders for effective road management and improved service delivery.
  • Foster Accountability: Promote transparency in road funding and expenditure.
  • Enhance Socio-Economic Growth: Support infrastructure development to boost connectivity and economic development.
