Overview

The Commission for University Education (CUE), established under the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012, is Kenya’s regulatory body for university education. Operational since 2013, it ensures quality assurance, accreditation, and compliance of universities with established standards. CUE develops policies, monitors curricula, and oversees the establishment of new universities. It also facilitates collaboration between universities, government, and industry to enhance higher education. Through its mandate, CUE safeguards academic excellence and promotes global competitiveness, supporting Kenya’s vision of a robust and innovative university education system.

CEO: Prof. Mike Kuria

Prof. Mike Kuria, the CEO of the Commission for University Education, holds a PhD in
Literature. He previously served as Deputy Executive Secretary at the Inter-University
Council for East Africa and was the founding Director of the Center for Quality Assurance at a leading Kenyan university, championing academic excellence and quality standards.

Functions

  • Accreditation: Approves the establishment of universities and accredits university programs to ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Quality Assurance: Sets standards and guidelines for higher education, ensuring institutions comply with regulatory frameworks.
  • Inspection and Monitoring: Regularly inspects universities to assess compliance with accreditation requirements and quality benchmarks.
  • Curriculum Review: Evaluates and approves curricula to ensure they are aligned with national development goals and global standards.
  • Advisory Role: Advises the government on university education matters, including funding, policies, and strategies for sector improvement.
  • Research Promotion: Encourages research and innovation through collaborations among universities, industries, and government entities.
  • Harmonization of Education: Aligns university education with regional and international standards to enhance mobility and recognition.
  • Capacity Building: Provides guidance and support to improve governance and management in universities.
  • Policy Development: Develops policies and guidelines for the establishment, growth, and development of university education.
  • Dispute Resolution: Addresses complaints and disputes related to university operations, programs, and accreditation issues.
