Overview

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) was established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act, 2013, and began operations in 2014. It serves as the regulatory body overseeing the quality and standards of technical and vocational education and training in Kenya. TVETA’s mandate includes accreditation of institutions, programs, and trainers, ensuring compliance with established guidelines. The authority promotes access, equity, and relevance in training, fostering a skilled workforce for economic development and addressing industry needs through partnerships and innovative learning approaches.

Dr. Kipkirui Langat, PhD, FIETK, is the Director General of Kenya’s TVETA since 2015. He holds a PhD in Engineering Systems and Management from Egerton University and an MBA in Strategic Management from Moi University. With over 27 years of experience, he has held key roles in Kenya’s TVET sector.

Functions

  • Accreditation of TVET Institutions: Approves and licenses institutions offering technical and vocational training, ensuring they meet legal and quality standards.
  • Approval of Training Programs: Accredits and registers training programs to ensure they are relevant, industry-oriented, and aligned with the country’s skills development needs.
  • Trainer Certification and Registration: Certifies and maintains a register of qualified trainers to ensure that they meet professional standards and are adequately skilled.
  • Quality Assurance and Standards Enforcement: Monitors TVET institutions for compliance with quality standards and takes corrective action where necessary.
  • Research and Innovation Promotion: Conducts studies to identify skills gaps, improve training methodologies, and encourage innovation in technical and vocational training.
  • Fostering Industry Linkages: Facilitates collaboration between TVET institutions and industries to promote work-based learning, internships, and job market alignment.
  • Advisory Role on Policy Development: Provides expert advice to the government on TVET policies, frameworks, and strategies to enhance skills development and employment.
  • Setting Standards for TVET: Develops and enforces guidelines for infrastructure, curricula, equipment, and teaching methodologies in training institutions.
  • Promoting Equity and Access: Works to ensure equal opportunities for all, including marginalized groups, in accessing quality technical and vocational education.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Compliance: Regularly reviews institutional performance, tracks compliance with regulatory requirements, and evaluates the effectiveness of TVET systems in achieving national goals.
