The National Council for Law Reporting (Kenya Law) was established under the National Council for Law Reporting Act (Act No. 11 of 1994) to publish and disseminate the official reports of court decisions, including judgments of the Kenyan judiciary. It began operations in 1996 and is tasked with ensuring that judicial decisions are readily accessible, promoting the development of law, and supporting legal research. The Council’s key role is to publish the Kenya Law Reports, which contain authoritative decisions from Kenyan courts, contributing to legal transparency and accessibility.

CEO: Prof. Jack Mwimali

Prof. Jack Mwimali is the CEO and Editor of the National Council for Law Reporting
(Kenya Law). He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Nairobi. Prof. Mwimali has
extensive experience in legal research, publishing, and academia, with a focus on constitutional and international law.

Functions

  • Publication of Judicial Decisions: Publish and disseminate official reports of court decisions, including judgments from the Kenyan courts.
  • Legal Research and Documentation: Facilitate legal research by maintaining an accessible archive of judicial decisions, statutes, and other relevant legal documents.
  • Promote Legal Transparency: Enhance transparency in the judicial process by ensuring court decisions are readily available to the public.
  • Develop Law Reports: Ensure the publication of the Kenya Law Reports, which are comprehensive and authoritative.
  • Support Legal Education: Provide a resource for legal practitioners, researchers, and academics by offering updated legal materials.
