Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) was established in 2020 under an Executive Order to enhance the operational capacity of the Kenya Navy. Located at the Mtongwe Naval Base, it commenced operations on December 17, 2021. KSL’s mandate includes shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair services for naval and civilian vessels. The company aims to foster local expertise, contribute to national security, and boost Kenya’s blue economy by creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. KSL seeks to position Kenya as a key player in Africa’s maritime sector, promoting innovation and sustainability in its operations.
Functions
- Shipbuilding: Design and construct various types of vessels, including naval ships and civilian ships, to meet national and regional demands.
- Ship Maintenance and Repair: Provide comprehensive maintenance and repair services for vessels operated by the Kenya Navy and other governmental and private entities.
- Support for National Defense: Enhance the capabilities of the Kenya Navy by constructing and maintaining ships that support national security interests.
- Capacity Development: Develop local skills and expertise in shipbuilding and repair through training programs and partnerships with educational institutions.
- Economic Development: Contribute to the blue economy by fostering the growth of the maritime sector, creating jobs, and generating revenue.
