The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is mandated to explore, develop, and promote geothermal energy in Kenya, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy mix. Its primary roles include drilling geothermal wells, conducting research and development, and managing geothermal resources to generate sustainable electricity. GDC plays a crucial role in enhancing energy security and supporting the national goal of achieving 5,000 MW of geothermal power by 2030. Through its initiatives, GDC aims to stimulate economic growth and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Mr. Paul Ngugi has over 25 years of experience in the geothermal sector, starting as a Drilling Engineer at KenGen and later serving as Head of Geothermal Planning at Olkaria. Ngugi joined GDC in 2009 as General Manager for Business Development, where he focused on corporate strategy and fundraising.

Functions

  • Resource Development: Explore, develop, and manage geothermal resources to generate steam for electricity production.
  • Drilling Operations: Conduct drilling of geothermal wells and manage associated technical operations.
  • Steam Sales: Provide steam to electricity generation companies, including Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and private investors.
  • Research and Development: Engage in research to advance geothermal technology and improve efficiency in resource utilization.
  • Infrastructure Development: Oversee the construction of necessary infrastructure to support geothermal energy projects.
  • Capacity Building: Train personnel and develop human resources to ensure skilled management of geothermal operations.
