Overview

The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) is mandated to promote and implement nuclear energy programs in Kenya, enhancing the country’s electricity generation capabilities. Key roles include conducting public awareness campaigns, ensuring compliance with international safety standards, facilitating research and development in nuclear technology, and building capacity in the energy sector. The agency also focuses on infrastructure development and environmental protection to support sustainable energy initiatives. Established under the Energy Act of 2019, NuPEA plays a crucial role in Kenya’s transition towards nuclear energy as part of its broader energy strategy​.

CEO: Justus Wabuyabo

Mr. Justus Wabuyabo holds a Bachelor of Laws from Moi University and a Master’s in International Law from the University of Nairobi. With over 22 years of experience, he previously served as the Director of Legal and Regulatory Services at NuPEA and has held roles in various legal capacities, including a lecturer at the Kenya School of Law and Mount Kenya University.

Functions

  • Promote Nuclear Energy: Act as the implementing organization for the nuclear energy program in Kenya to enhance electricity generation.
  • Public Education: Conduct public awareness campaigns about the benefits and safety of nuclear energy to foster community acceptance.
  • Research and Development: Engage in R&D activities related to nuclear power and the broader energy sector, including renewable energy technologies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with international treaties, conventions, and national regulations related to nuclear energy and safety.
  • Capacity Building: Develop skills and knowledge in the energy sector through training programs and partnerships with educational institutions.
  • Collaboration: Foster cooperation with local, regional, and international stakeholders in nuclear energy development and related fields.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to policy formulation regarding the development of nuclear power and the management of nuclear technology.
  • Infrastructure Development: Identify and address infrastructure needs related to the nuclear power program as outlined in the 15-year roadmap for Kenya’s nuclear power.
  • Environmental Protection: Implement measures to ensure the safe and sustainable use of nuclear technology, minimizing environmental impacts.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish frameworks for monitoring the progress of nuclear projects and evaluating their impact on energy generation and sustainability in Kenya.
