The National Heroes Council of Kenya, established under the Kenya Heroes Act No. 5 of 2014, is responsible for recognizing and honoring national heroes and heroines. Its mandate includes identifying individuals who have significantly contributed to Kenya’s development, organizing commemorative events, and promoting public awareness about these heroes. The Council also advises the government on matters related to national hero recognition, maintains a database of heroes, and supports their families. By fostering a sense of national pride, the Council plays a vital role in promoting unity and civic engagement in Kenya.

CHARLES O. WAMBIA, O.G.W. holds a Master’s degree in Project Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and has extensive experience in public service and leadership roles across various sectors. Wambia is dedicated to the recognition of national heroes in Kenya.

Functions

  • Recognition of Heroes: Identify and honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation’s development and unity​.
  • Commemoration Events: Organize ceremonies and events to celebrate national heroes, ensuring their contributions are publicly acknowledged.​
  • Education and Awareness: Promote awareness about the role of heroes in the country’s history through educational programs and public campaigns.​
  • Development of Criteria: Establish criteria for the selection of national heroes to ensure transparency and fairness in the recognition process.​
  • Documentation: Maintain a comprehensive database of national heroes, including their achievements and contributions to society.​
  • Advisory Role: Advise the government on matters related to national heroes and their recognition​.
  • Collaboration with Other Entities: Work with educational institutions, NGOs, and other stakeholders to promote the ideals of heroism and patriotism​.
  • Support for Families of Heroes: Provide support to the families of recognized heroes, including financial assistance and other forms of recognition.​
  • Promotion of National Unity: Foster a sense of national pride and unity by highlighting the contributions of heroes from diverse backgrounds​.
  • Research and Publication: Conduct research on the history and contributions of national heroes and publish findings to educate the public.
