Overview

The Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) in Kenya, established under the Tourism Act, 2011, is tasked with regulating and promoting the tourism industry to enhance its growth and sustainability. Its mandate includes implementing quality standards, classifying and grading tourism facilities, and ensuring compliance with regulations. TRA oversees tourism service automation to improve efficiency and ease of business operations. The Authority collaborates with stakeholders to develop policies that support sustainable tourism practices, enhance visitor experiences, and promote Kenya as a competitive tourism destination while fostering operational excellence in the sector.

CEO: Norbert K. Talam

Norbert Talam, Director General of the Tourism Regulatory Authority, holds an MBA from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Commerce from the Catholic University. With over 20 years of finance experience, he previously served as CEO at First Community Bank and worked with K-Rep Bank and Kenya Airways.

  • Regulate and oversee the tourism industry to ensure compliance with established standards and laws.
  • Implement quality assurance and accreditation schemes for tourism and hospitality service providers.
  • Classify and grade accommodation and catering facilities to promote service excellence.
  • Develop and enforce policies that enhance sustainable tourism practices.
  • Facilitate the automation of tourism services to improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to promote Kenya as a competitive tourism destination.
  • Conduct research and data collection to inform tourism policy and strategy.
  • Provide technical assistance and capacity-building programs for industry stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of tourism facilities and services.
  • Promote public awareness and education on the importance of tourism to the economy.
