The Counsellors and Psychologists Board (CPB) in Kenya, established under the Counsellors and Psychologists Act No. 14 of 2014, is tasked with regulating the practice of counselling and psychology. Its mandates include registering qualified professionals, establishing
ethical standards, advising the government on policy, and promoting public awareness of mental health issues. The CPB also focuses
on training and continuous professional development, protecting clients’ rights, and supporting research in the field. These roles aim to
enhance professional practice and ensure the delivery of quality mental health services in Kenya.

Dr. Matilda Mghoi Mwakazo is the Registrar and CEO of the Counsellors and Psychologists Board in Kenya. She holds a doctorate in psychology and has extensive experience in mental health practice, policy formulation, and administration. Dr. Mwakazo is dedicated to enhancing counselling and psychological services across the country.

Functions

  • Registration: Oversee the registration of qualified counsellors and psychologists to ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Regulation of Practice: Develop and enforce regulations governing the practice of counselling and psychology in Kenya.
  • Professional Standards: Establish and promote standards of professional conduct and ethical practice among practitioners.
  • Policy Advice: Advise the Cabinet Secretary on policies and programs related to counselling and psychology.
  • Guidelines Issuance: Issue guidelines in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary to govern the profession.
  • Training and Development: Facilitate training and continuous professional development for practitioners to enhance competency.
  • Public Awareness: Promote public awareness about mental health issues and the roles of counsellors and psychologists.
  • Protection of Clients: Protect the rights and welfare of individuals receiving psychological and counselling services.
  • Representation: Represent and protect the interests of members of the counselling and psychology professions.
  • Research Promotion: Encourage and support research in the fields of counselling and psychology to advance knowledge and practice.
