Lady Northey Day Nursery

Lady Northey Day Nursery, established in 1919 and situated along State House Road in Nairobi, stands as one of Kenya’s most storied early childhood education centers. Originally founded as a daycare for children of white government employees during the colonial era, the institution eventually transitioned into a public facility managed by the Nairobi City County government. The school gained significant historical prestige in 1964 when the founding President, Jomo Kenyatta, enrolled his son and future President Uhuru Kenyatta there for his early education. Despite its elite historical associations, the nursery remains a public institution today, though it has faced contemporary challenges such as land encroachment issues and deteriorating infrastructure typical of long-standing county facilities. As of 2025, it continues to operate under the Nairobi City County’s pre-primary education framework, serving the local community as a vital link to the city’s early educational heritage.
