Established in 1885 by the Church Missionary Society, Dagoretti Girls Rehabilitation School in Kinoo, Kiambu County, is a public boarding institution dedicated to the holistic transformation of girls aged 10 to 17. Initially founded as a rescue center for marginalized young women, it evolved through several roles—including a boys’ correctional facility during the colonial era—before returning to its mission as a specialized girls’ rehabilitation school in 2004 to decongest the Kirigiti facility. Today, the school operates under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and provides a safe haven for approximately 100 girls who have entered the juvenile justice system, either as “protection cases” from abusive backgrounds or as those in conflict with the law. Its comprehensive rehabilitation model combines formal primary education with vocational training in fields like bakery and fashion design, alongside intensive mentorship and counseling programs supported by partners like Clean Start and Nafisika Trust.
