Overview

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), established in 2009, is responsible for regulating veterinary medicines in Kenya. It ensures the safety, efficacy, and quality of veterinary medicines used in animal health. The Directorate oversees the registration, licensing, and distribution of veterinary products, aiming to protect both animal health and public safety. VMD also plays a key role in ensuring that veterinary medicines comply with national and international standards, contributing to the effective management of animal diseases, food security, and public health through safe and effective treatments.

CEO: Dr. Emily Muema

Dr. Emily Muema, Ph.D., holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and has extensive experience in regulatory affairs and animal health. She has worked in various roles, focusing on the development and enforcement of policies related to veterinary medicines. Dr. Muema is committed to enhancing animal health and public safety.

Functions

  • Regulation of Veterinary Medicines – Oversees the registration, control, and use of veterinary medicines in Kenya, ensuring they meet safety standards.
  • Registration of Veterinary Products – Evaluates and approves veterinary medicines for use, ensuring they are effective and safe for both animals and humans.
  • Licensing of Manufacturers and Distributors – Issues licenses to companies manufacturing or distributing veterinary medicines, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements.
  • Quality Control and Assurance – Monitors the quality of veterinary medicines available in the market, ensuring compliance with set standards.
  • Promotion of Safe Use – Educates stakeholders on the safe use of veterinary medicines to prevent misuse, resistance, and environmental contamination.
  • Post-Market Surveillance – Monitors the safety and effectiveness of veterinary medicines after they have been marketed to ensure they do not pose health risks.
  • Regulation of Veterinary Medical Equipment – Oversees the approval and regulation of equipment used in conjunction with veterinary medicines.
  • Public Health Protection – Ensures that veterinary medicines used in animal health do not adversely affect human health, food safety, or the environment.
  • Advisory Role – Provides expert advice to the government and other stakeholders on issues related to veterinary medicines and animal health.
  • Collaboration with International Bodies – Works with international organizations to align Kenya’s veterinary medicine policies with global standards and practices.
