National Cereals and Produce Board

Overview

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) is a state corporation established under the National Cereals and Produce Board Act, Cap 338 of 1985. It ensures food security through the procurement, storage, and distribution of grains and other produce. NCPB also
manages the Strategic Food Reserve, stabilizes grain markets, and provides warehousing services. Formed from the merger of the Maize and Produce Board (1955) and the Wheat Board of Kenya (1939), NCPB plays a crucial role in Kenya’s agricultural sector by supporting farmers and enhancing national food resilience.

Functions

  • Procurement and Storage of Grains – Acquires and stores cereals such as maize, wheat, and rice for national food security.
  • Management of Strategic Food Reserves – Ensures availability of emergency food supplies during crises.
  • Grain Market Stabilization – Regulates prices by purchasing and releasing stocks to prevent market fluctuations.
  • Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) – Offers certified grain storage and issuance of tradeable warehouse receipts.
  • Distribution of Government-subsidized Fertilizer – Supports farmers by supplying affordable inputs.
  • Grain Quality Assurance – Maintains high standards for stored cereals to prevent post-harvest losses.
  • Supply of Grains to Institutions – Provides food to schools, prisons, and government agencies.
  • Commercial Grain Trading – Buys and sells cereals to ensure market efficiency.
  • Advisory and Extension Services – Supports farmers with information on post-harvest handling and storage.
  • Partnerships with Stakeholders – Collaborates with government, private sector, and development partners on food security initiatives.
