Overview

South Nyanza Sugar Company (SONY Sugar) is a state-owned corporation established in 1976 under the Companies Act (Cap 486) of Kenya. It began operations in 1979 to promote sugar production and economic growth in the South Nyanza region. Based in Awendo, Migori County, SONY Sugar plays a key role in Kenya’s sugar industry, supporting thousands of farmers and employees. The company engages in sugar milling, marketing, and distribution. SONY Sugar remains vital in enhancing local livelihoods and Kenya’s food security.

Functions

  • Sugar Production – Processing and milling sugarcane into refined sugar for domestic consumption and industrial use.
  • Sugarcane Development – Supporting farmers with improved cane varieties, fertilizers, and technical expertise to enhance productivity.
  • Marketing & Distribution – Selling, packaging, and distributing sugar and its by-products across Kenya, ensuring market stability.
  • Farmer Support Services – Providing financial assistance, farming inputs, and training programs to contracted farmers to boost yields.
  • Employment Creation – Generating direct jobs in the factory and farms, as well as indirect employment in transport and retail sectors.
  • Research & Innovation – Conducting studies on high-yield sugarcane varieties, disease resistance, and improving processing efficiency.
  • Infrastructure Development – Constructing and maintaining roads and transport systems to facilitate smooth cane delivery to the factory.
  • Diversification – Expanding into by-products like ethanol, molasses, and bagasse-based power generation to maximize resource utilization.
  • Revenue Generation – Contributing to the national economy through sugar sales, taxation, and foreign exchange savings by reducing sugar imports.
  • Environmental Conservation – Promoting sustainable agricultural practices, waste recycling, and pollution control to minimize environmental impact.
