The Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) was established under the Tea Act, 2020, which came into effect on 1st June 2021. It replaced the Tea Directorate and is tasked with regulating, promoting, and developing Kenya’s tea industry. TBK ensures the industry adheres to standards, oversees tea production, processing, and marketing, and supports market access for Kenyan tea. It also plays a role in policy formulation, research, and innovation to enhance productivity. The Board works to improve the livelihoods of tea farmers and strengthens the sector’s competitiveness in global markets.

Willy K. Mutai holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi. He has an extensive background in the tea industry, having served as a Technical Manager at the Tea Board of Kenya. His leadership is focused on promoting sustainability, efficiency, and innovation in the sector.

- Research and Innovation – Promotes and funds research to improve tea production techniques and tea plant varieties.
- Policy Formulation and Implementation – Develops policies that support sustainable growth in the tea sector.
- Farmer Support and Capacity Building – Provides training, extension services, and technical assistance to tea farmers.
- Regulation of Tea Prices – Monitors and regulates tea prices to ensure fair trade and stability within the sector.
- Sustainability and Environmental Protection – Promotes sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation within the tea industry.
